Benefit Tonight for Lost Boys of Sudan

From today’s Tennessean:

Comedian Torry Martin supports Lost Boys of Sudan

- FIONA SOLTES, FOR THE TENNESSEAN

Award-winning comedian and storyteller Torry Martin – once compared to Garrison Keillor with a spiritual perspective – donates his time and talents this weekend to raise money for the Lost Boys of Sudan. About 180 of these Sudanese refugees live in Nashville, a portion of tens of thousands of boys ages 5-15 who fled their African villages in 1987 because of civil war.

In addition to Martin’s family-friendly tales of his former life in Alaska, the benefit, which takes place at 7 tonight at First Baptist Church, 108 Seventh Ave. S., will include native songs by the Lost Boys and musical duo Blue Eyed Grass.

“I wanted to do this benefit specifically as a valentine to the Lost Boys because I can’t imagine the things they’ve endured,” Martin says. “I wanted to show that the people of Nashville hold these young men in our heart.”

Tickets are $10 or $9 for those in groups of 10 or more. For details go to www.thelostboysfoundation.org, www.torrymartin.com or call 227-6443.
