Are you struggling with the new 990 form? Are you ready to give up on answering the questions? Is your extension on filing the form running out?
CNM can help. Every nonprofit with revenues greater than $1 million last year must now fill out the more comprehensive 990 form. Next year, the floor will drop to $500,000, and even more nonprofits will be required to complete the form.
We wholeheartedly agree with the need for nonprofit transparency. But there are questions that need to be answered on the new 990 that are difficult – and your accountants will not be able to answer them for you. Questions dealing with executive compensation and board conflicts are policy issues, not accounting issues.
Larry Howlett, a CPA and a former IRS agent, is our special consultant who is totally familiar with these questions. He helps a number of agencies with their filings, and stays current with the latest information from federal officials.
Larry can help you in one of two ways:
1. He can consult to you directly to help you fill out your 990 form or to review what you and your accountant have completed before you send it in.
2. He will be available for a day at CNM to meet with agencies individually and give them advice. We will schedule these meetings, and he will need to spend a little time reviewing your materials before your meeting, so he is up to speed on your issues.
There will be a nominal fee for these consultations, but we are trying to keep it at a minimal level.
If you have an interest in this assistance, please contact Ingrid Moody at 259-3911 extension 11, or ingrid@cnm.org. She can answer any questions about the process and help you in scheduling Larry.

CNM also has a form 990 workshop coming up on September 29 with Larry Howlett, “Extreme Makeover” 990 Edition. Check it out if you need a brief re-introduction to the new form!
