CNN Heroes Nomination Process Kicks-Off

Over the holidays, many of you may have caught the CNN Heroes Special that aired a bunch of times. It reminds me of CNM’s Salute to Excellence event. Although it is done on a much more grandiose and international level, while Salute is local and much smaller, it has the same basic idea of honoring unsung heroes. The nomination process just got started, so if you are interested in finding out about how to nominate a Hero from right here in Middle TN, click here. Here is the 2008 Hero of the Year:

How do I have access to a form or forms or information on how I can nominate a CNN hero? There is a man in Zimbabwe who absolutely deserves the CNN hero nomination, but I can’t seem to access any website with nomination information.

    hello CNN heroes,
What a wonderful thing you’re doing, recognizing people who matter instead of celebrities who, let’s face it, are usually not contributing to anyone other than the fashion designers they promote on the runways. I’d like to add a nomination.

OK, here’s the rest of a half-finished email I sent a minute ago. Please excuse my apparent inability to hit the right button.
I hope CNN will seriously consider Greg Jenks as one of your Heroes. Greg is the founder of the ZOE ministry. ZOE, which originally stood for the Zimbabwe Orphans Endeavor and was formed to bring food, shelter, and medicine to AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. Its Giving Hope program gives marketable job skills to the millions of orphans who are raising their brothers and sisters after their parents die. These kids, who have no government safety net, are often caring for a surviving sick parent and end up on the streets or selling drugs or worse to survive. Giving Hope participants learn a trade and become self-sufficient in two or three years, keeping their brothers and sisters fed, sheltered, and in school.
In July I traveled to Kenya with Greg and the ZOE and saw first-hand the remarkable job they are doing serving the millions of AIDS orphans in southern Africa. Please consider Greg and ZOE as one of your heroes. His website is http://www.zoeministry.org.

I wish to nominate my colleague Dr. Stephen Suber, Professor of Music at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
This extraordinary human being flys regularly to the Phillipines where he helps a large group of people find and maintain housing, bought 2 vans so that they can begin a taxi service to generate income for themselves, and much more. All he does for them is at his own expense. His email is ssuber@selu.edu. Please accept my nomination for my friend and colleague, whose selfless deeds deserve recognition. Thank you

There is a Woman I would like to nominate for Unsung Hero her name is Sarah Reed. Many years ago she came to this country because of the Civil War that broke out in her homeland’ West Liberia Africa. She didnt have much only the clothes on her back and $20 to her name. Because of the great opportunities in our country Sarah was able to overcome language barriers, poverty and graduate college. Because of what she went through it only increased her desire to give back to this country and back home. In 2001 Sarah Reed founded Women Of Purpose a 501(c)3 organization that helps women and young girls overcome obstacles they may be facing through mentoring, education, food and prevention. Her desire is to give them a “Hand Up” in life. Over 50% of children in her country don’t attend school due to lack of funds for uniforms and school supplies. Also, 85% of Liberians are unemployed. She works diligently to raise awareness to the needs here in our community and West Liberia. The things we tend to take for granted (i.e.) to buy toiletry items such as tooth brush, tooth paste, soap, deoderant may cost us $9. in her country approximately $30. Sarah recently came back from a trip home where she distributed school supplies and hygiene products and it was overwhelming to see the after effects the Civil War had on her country.

I would like to nominate Constance Collins for the award. As a young child of 10 or 13 she felt a certain compassion for street poeple that never left her. She used the funds that she earned as an attorney and real estate developer to purchase a delapidated building in an impoverished neighborhood and renovate it into Lotus House, a shelter for homeless women that allows them to stay there for one year in order to put together their lives and become a productive part of society. The shelter not only houses the women, helps to train them for certain careers, but most importantly gives them an opportunity to heal their spirit and restore self esteem.

i would like to nominate my brother Tim Williams. There is no big story here other than he has got to be the most humble person and giving person that I know. Tim has been out of work for a year. His friends at church have been good to give him jobs around their homes as have his landladies. His has tithed 10% of these wages when he really could have used the money himself. His car is not much but he has been willing to drive to Asheboro and help my mother at least twice a month. Tim lives in the Raleigh area. He wanted to go to New Orleans and help after the Katrina diaster and went through the training to prepare him. He never did go and I am not sure why but I feel it was some of the red tape that hindered his willingness to help. He works with Habitat of Humanity to ensure others have a chance at a good home and he lives in one room. I know there are many entries and many great accomplishments that you see but I hope someone will read this and in some way let my brother know he is appreciated. Please let me know what I need to do to complete this nomination. Thank you Nancy Jolley.

I want to nominate this couple who are senior citizens who after hurricane Katrina instead of rebuilding where things would seem easier they stuck to their passion of rebuilding their day care center that serves low income families in New Orleans East. They still have not been able to rebuild their residence so, they reside in one of the buildings that used to house the 4 year olds and after school program. This past year was her 25 year aniversary. Director Gilda Duplessis Toledano wanted to have an event to celebrate but, decided to keep the funds instead for professional development for the caregivers that work there. She possesses the strength and her husband Warren Toledano who stands by her side took care of her elderly mom til her death this past year. Finally, during the rebuilding of her Day Care Center she went back to finish her Bachelors in Early Childhood Teacher Certification.I admire these two heroes. Their story is an amazing journey of triumph!
