Safe Haven Appoints New Board Chair

From The Nashville City Paper

Safe Haven Family Shelter appointed Jim Shulman as the nonprofit’s new board president, according to a press release issued today.

Shulman, who served two terms on the City Council representing the Green Hills area, is currently the Deputy of Commissioners for the Tennessee Department of Health. He is also on the board of the Adventure Science Center, the Nashville City Cemetery Association and the Nashville Children’s Theatre.

“Safe Haven is a unique organization that has come up with a simple formula for assisting homeless families to get back on their feet,” Shulman said. “With a success rate in the 80 percent range, Safe Haven is making remarkable strides in the effort to deal with the issue of homelessness.

“It is an honor to serve as President of the Board this year.”

Safe Haven Family Shelter is the only organization that houses homeless families together while giving them financial, social and faith-based support while they get back on their feet and into homes of their own.

As board president, Shulman will be the chief decision maker for Safe Haven and in charge of overseeing the organization, said Safehaven’s public relations director Stephanie H. Tinnell.

“He’s a sweetheart. He’s a great guy to be in that position. He’s very understanding. He understands the needs we have here,” Tinnell said. I really feel he’ll be a great asset to the organization and I feel he’ll lead us in the right direction to help us grow as an organization.

Shulman, a native of Johnson City, moved to Nashville to attend Vanderbilt University, where he earned both a bachelor degree and a J.D. degree. While in college he worked in Washington D.C. for then-Congressman Al Gore, Jr. and after graduating he served as an assistant commissioner at the bureau of TennCare as well as the executive assistant to the Commissioner of Finance and Administration.
