Ms. Cheap: Find Creative Ways to Support Nonprofit Community During Recession

Good advice from Ms. Cheap in today’s Tennessean:

Every day in this lousy economy, I hear or read about non-profits struggling to survive.

I was out at St. Luke’s Community House in West Nashville earlier this month and learned that they’re seeing the need for their food and services surging out of control. At the same time, donations from businesses and individuals are on a downward spiral because everybody out there is hurting – or at least feeling wobbly about their future financial well being.

But that doesn’t mean we’re totally powerless to help the agencies and organizations that help the less fortunate in our community – like St. Luke’s, Second Harvest Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Bethlehem Center and countless others.

Ms. Cheap Offers Items for Nonprofits

This article ran last week in the Tennessean. The deadline for submission is tomorrow:

Chance arises for nonprofits to pick from list of free stuff

Most of us have good, useful things sitting around idle – things we no longer use but hang onto because we don’t know what to do with them.

These “things” are taking up space and cluttering up our lives, but we just can’t bear to throw them out knowing that someone else might be able to make good use of them.

At the same time, I know that charities are hurting as they try to offer more services with fewer resources.

So today I’m asking nonprofits across Middle Tennessee to tell me if they can use any of these once-loved items that people have jumbling up their closets, basements and attics.
