WPLN: Rise in First Time Homlessness

WPLN reports today on the Nashville Rescue Mission experiencing an increase in demand for services:

Agencies that serve the homeless in Nashville suspect that the number of first-time cases are on the rise.

The Nashville Rescue mission reports a 16% increase in meals served this January compared with last year. And, to keep up with growing demand, the Campus on Human Development has added over 40 new homeless support courses in finance and stress management.

Rescue Mission Wins Prolonged Legal Battle

From today’s Tennessean:

Strip clubs and other sexually oriented businesses will not be allowed to operate within 500 feet of the Nashville Rescue Mission’s property after a recent decision by the Tennessee Court of Appeals.

The decision marks the end of a five-year fight over the use of the building at 660 Lafayette Street, which for a time housed a gentlemen’s club called Stephanie’s Cabaret. The owner of the business, Stephanie Capps, obtained a building license but struggled to keep the adult business license after the rescue mission pointed out that it was zoned as a church.

Several appeals decisions related to the case issued Friday ruled that the mission met the definition of a church, so adult businesses couldn’t locate within 500 feet of the mission per Metro ordinance.

Rescue Mission Seeks Food Donations for Thanksgiving Banquet

From today’s Tennessean:

The Nashville Rescue Mission reports it is seeing lower-than-average contributions for its annual Thanksgiving banquet for the city’s homeless this year.

With less than two weeks left before the holiday, the Nashville Rescue Mission is in need of donations of fresh and frozen turkeys, canned vegetables, fresh produce, cranberry sauce, paper plates, plastic cutlery, aluminum foil and foil turkey pans, a news release said.

Food gifts are accepted at the Mission’s Donation Center, 616 Seventh Ave. S., from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Monetary donations can be made online at www.nashvillerescuemission.org.
