Upon graduation from Stanford Law School, Scott put his legal skills and training to use in the education sector as the legal counsel for Aspire Public Schools, a California nonprofit that builds and operates high quality public charter schools to prepare urban students for college. After seeing the power of professionals with diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives working together to improve urban education, Scott founded Education Pioneers in 2003 to develop a national network of leaders and entrepreneurs focused on devising and implementing creative solutions to our nation’s most pressing educational problems.

Vanderbilt Offers Opportunity to Host International Student Through Fellowship Program

Announcement from Vanderbilt University’s Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program:

Are you looking for a new way to get involved in the community, do you have international interests, or do you just enjoy showing off Nashville? If the answer is yes, we have the activity for you!

During the 2009-2010 school year, Vanderbilt will be hosting 8 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows. The program brings accomplished mid-career professionals from developing nations and emerging democracies to the United States for an academic year to study, gain related professional experience and foster cultural exchange. The program provides a basis for lasting ties between United States citizens and the Fellow and it strengthens the global exchange of knowledge and experience. For more information about the program, click here.

An integral part of the Humphrey Program is the (non live-in) Host families. Host families often act as friends and extended family networks to the Fellows. Since we know everyone is very busy and time is limited, the time commitment is very flexible. Hosts can visit with your assigned Fellow once a week to once a month through grocery shopping, dinners out or in your home, or cultural excursions. More information will be provided during the Hosts and Host Families Orientation on Thursday, August 13th. If you are interested in being a Host or Host Family or have any questions please contact Nancy DiNunzio, nancy.dinunzio@vanderbilt.edu or 615.390.0812, by July 31st, 2009.

Opportunity to Promote Your Agency Through Vanderbilt

Members of the CNM Excellence Network: This coming August Vanderbilt University is embarking upon its fourth annual Commodores in the Community event that will introduce 1600 eager first-year students to the vast array of service opportunities in the Nashville area.

In previous years these Vanderbilt students have participated in a single day of volunteer work. This year, in an effort to promote awareness and longevity in volunteer opportunities, Vanderbilt is hosting Commodores in the Community: Community Agency Fair.

You are invited to participate in this event by staffing a table at the Community Agency Fair from 9am-12pm on Tuesday, August 25th. All first-year students will visit the fair and learn about volunteer opportunities with your organization as well as gain an understanding of the issues you work on in the Nashville community.

Vanderbilt University will also be promoting September 11th National Day of Service and encouraging student groups to make plans for a Day of Service following the community agency fair.

To sign up to participate in the fair, please click on the link below. For planning purposes, please respond by no later than Friday July 3.

Thank you for your consideration of this event and for all you do in the Nashville community. We hope you will be able participate in this great event come August!
